Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised an only daughter by her grandmother. Scott was a graduate of The Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. She completed her secondary education the course of two years while also working. She was hoping to become an high school English teacher. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she quit school. As a poet, she began performing in poetry performances live. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. She was first outed in the midst of a Roots Show. Afterward she secured collaborations with musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience performing arts through the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign with Hidden Beach Recordings.
